GLENDALE, Colo. – The Pearl City Black Bears’ bid for the USA Rugby Men’s Division I national championship hit a double detour at Infinity Park the past weekend.
The Black Bears suffered a heartbreaking 23-22 semifinal loss to host Glendale on Saturday and then was routed 49-17 by top-seeded Olympic Club in Sunday’s consolation match.
Pearl City, the tournament’s No. 2 seed, appeared headed for the title game, carrying a 15-0 lead into the second half before the Raptors rallied.
Still down by a 22-17 score in the 75th minute, Glendale gambled by going for a three-point penalty kick rather than hoping for a game-tying try and possible win with its good field position. Mike Graham’s boot was good, drawing the Raptors within 22-20.
With only seconds of injury time remaining, the Raptors were awarded their third penalty kick of the game at midfield. Pearl City was then slapped with another penalty that moved Glendale to a more manageable attempt from the 40-meter mark.
Graham sent the three-point kick through the uprights for the game-winner that dropped the stunned Black Bears into the consolation game.
Muscatine again suffered through second-half struggles that turned a tight contest into a runaway for Olympic Club.
The Black Bears were down just 21-14 at the intermission before being outscored 28-3 in the final 40 minutes.
Life University of Marietta, Ga., claimed the other spot in the championship match by defeating Olympic Club 30-20 in Saturday’s other semifinal game.
Sunday’s title game was a tight battle before Life University emerged with a 15-14 victory over Glendale.
