MUSCATINE, Iowa - Cindy Klebe is hoping the sun will shine Saturday so she can pull off the fundraiser, Summit for Someone - Pedal with a Purpose thru Muscatine and Louisa Counties.
The 60-mile bike ride will go along the back roads of Muscatine and Louisa counties.
The proceeds are being collected through Summit for Someone, a fundraising program to help Big City Mountaineers send at-risk urban teenagers on curriculum-based, week-long backpacking adventures. Volunteers of Summit for Someone pledge to raise money and get the opportunity to attempt to climb up a mountain - in turn, summiting for someone.
Klebe plans to climb Mount Hood in Oregon at the end of June.
Klebe, 36, an avid bicyclist and park ranger with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, has pledged to raise $3,000 for Summit for Someone.
“I’m the planner, the instigator and the organizer,” Klebe said of the bike ride - but added that many people and businesses are helping to make it come together. “I thought it would be kind of cool to raise money by sharing my love of the outdoors and adventurous spirit with others.”
To register, riders must donate $25 for Klebe’s Summit for Someone pledge. As of Thursday there were 16 people signed up, but Klebe is expecting more if the weather cooperates.
“Most of the folks that have preregistered have donated more than the registration fee,” Klebe said.
Klebe also volunteers as an advisor for Venture Crew 4127, a local group that takes Boy Scouts on rock climbing trips.
She and her husband Mike opted not to have children of their own, which makes for ample volunteer time.
“It is nice to be able to give some time back to the community … and kids,” she said.
Riders do not have to do the entire 60 miles. At the halfway stop, rides will be available for those who request a lift back to Muscatine. Riders can also go to scheduled refreshment stops for breaks. There will also be a free lunch at the 28-mile point.
There will be raffle prizes, giveaways and other little surprises in store along the ride.
