Hayes Classic to benefit school and Josh Miller

MUSCATINE, Iowa – The 27th annual 2008 Hayes Classic will be a combined benefit for Josh Miller and the Hayes Catholic School this year.
On Jan. 22, Josh Miller a Muscatine High School alumnus and teacher at Durant High School, his wife Meghan and their daughter, Tenley, were in a serious car accident. Meghan and their unborn son, Bryce, were killed.
Tenley was injured but is doing fine. Josh sustained a serious head injury and is rehabbing at “On with Life” in Ankeny. It is the hope of the Miller family that they can raise additional funds through this effort to help pay for Josh Miller’s recovery and provide financial assistance for the care of both Tenley and their son, Brandon.
Josh Miller has been the previous chair of the Hayes Classic in recent years.
The Classic will be held Thursday, March 27; Friday, March 28; Sunday, March 30; and Thursday-Saturday, April 3-5. All games will be played at Bishop Hayes Catholic School, 2407 Cedar St., Muscatine.
Throughout the tournament, there will be a silent auction of donated items, T-shirts for sale and an opportunity for people to participate in a program called “Jump Shots for Josh.”
The idea for “Jump Shots for Josh” is similar to the “Birdies for Charity” at PGA golf tournaments.
Businesses and individuals are asked to pledge a certain dollar amount or so much for each 3-point basket made throughout the tournament.
Proceeds from all these events will go to the Josh Miller family.
Anyone who would like to donate an item for the silent donate an item for the silent auction, sign up for the “Jump Shots for Josh” program or for further information can call either Scott Miller (506-1819) or Katy Foulk (264-0108).
All entries for the tournament, with signed waiver sheets and entry fee of $125, must be received by 5 p.m., March 22. A $25 late charge will be added to late entries.
Pairings will be assigned after all entries are received. The team captain will be notified by phone no later than March 24. The first 24 teams to respond receive a spot in the single elimination tournament.
The top two teams receive awards: a first-place trophy and entry fee and a second-place trophy. The tournament is open to all players 17 and older. Any players under 18 years must have a parent or guardian sign a waiver.
Teams must have the same color shirts with numbers and there can be no more than two current college players per roster. Referees will be provided and a concession stand will be available at the games.
