WEST LIBERTY, Iowa — Gladys G. Blackman, 89, died Wednesday, Nov. 21, 2007, at the Simpson Memorial Home in West Liberty.

The Henderson-Barker Funeral Home in West Liberty is in charge of arrangements. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the Henderson-Barker Funeral Home, Gladys Blackman Memorial Fund, PO Box 46, West Liberty, Iowa, 52776.

Mrs. Blackman was born June 19, 1918, near Davenport, the daughter of Harry and Minnie Jens Klindt.

She married N.W. Blackman March 14, 1942, in Trenton, N.J. She was not to see her husband again for three years while he was serving overseas in WWII.

She and her husband moved to West Liberty in June 1951 and resided there for the next 47 years.

She was active in raising her two children, involved in many civic and social activities and assisted her husband in a busy dental practice.

She was a member of T.T.T., PEO, the American Legion Auxiliary, First Church United, a charter member of the West Liberty Country Club, a 4H leader and member of Ladies of the Moose and Ladies of the Elk.

She enjoyed her many hobbies including baking, cooking, gardening, collecting antiques, playing in numerous bridge clubs, golfing with her buddies, knitting and cross stitch.

During her retirement years, she and her husband enjoyed their winter months together in New Braunfels, Texas, with their large extended group of friends. In the summer months, they made their home in Iowa City.

She was happiest when she was surrounded by her husband, children and grandchildren.

Survivors include her husband; a daughter, Karen (Ronald) Wedekind of Wilmington, N.C.; a son, Gary (Zeena Janowsky) of Santa Rosa, Calif.; and four grandchildren, Jason Wedekind of Chapel Hill, N.C., Susan (Mark) Hines of Holly Springs, N.C., Graham Blackman of San Clemente, Calif., and Emily Blackman of San Francisco, Calif.

She was preceded in death by her parents, three sisters and a grandchild.
