Editor’s note: This is one in a series of profiles on local and area seniors who were selected by their schools as the top academic achievers and were honored at the fifth annual Governor’s Scholar Recognition Ceremony, held April 29 in Des Moines.
COLUMBUS JUNCTION, Iowa — Johnathan Huston doesn’t remember his parents ever telling him he had to do well in school, but he excelled in academics through the years.
“I always thought they expected it of me,” said the 19-year-old Columbus Community senior. “And I looked up to my older brother Joseph, who always did well in school.”
Johnathan was generally in the top five of his class.
Besides top grades, sports and music have been a big part of Johnathan’s life. He began taking guitar lessons at a young age.
Football is his favorite sport and he hopes to be a walk on
for the Iowa State University football team.
“I’ve been in contact with coaches there and am working towards that,” he said. He is also good at golf.
His plans for the future include many goals.
“I would like to do a lot of stuff — starting with doing good in college and having a good career. I’d like to have a farm. I will have to work to get that.”
Johnathan plans to get a degree in ag business, which he feels will open doors to several options in the business field.
He wasn’t expecting to be nominated for the Governor’s Scholar Recognition Ceremony, held April 29 in Des Moines.
“It was a nice honor,” he said.
